Ghent’s glass treasures: stained-glass art in Ghent from the Middle Ages to the present day
Ghent is home to some genuine glass treasures, some of which are barely known. During this walk, you will admire, amongst other things, the unique medieval glass heritage from the Dominican monastery ‘het Pand’. We will also take a closer look at the rediscovered and restored 16th-century panels from St. Bavo’s Cathedral. Finally, both in the cathedral and in St. Michael’s Church, we will reveal the story behind the 19th– and 20th-century stained-glass windows.
The stained-glass windows in Antwerp Cathedral: power politics and piety
Contrary to popular belief, not all stained-glass windows in churches are religious. On the contrary, they often are symbols of power and prestige, with religious aspects being of secondary importance. Other windows, however, were created out of pure piety. The guided tour in the cathedral covers not only the iconography of the windows but also their underlying history and significance.
